For more than a decade, Yemen has endured one of the world’s most devastating humanitarian crises. Ongoing conflict has fractured its health system, leaving millions without access to basic medical care. Diseases that should be easily preventable or treatable from malnutrition to waterborne illnesses continue to claim lives, particularly among children. Among the most persistent and deadly threats is cholera, a disease driven by unsafe water, poor sanitation, and weakened healthcare infrastructure.
The Cholera Outbreak: A National Emergency
Yemen’s cholera crisis has been described as the largest in modern history. Between 2016 and 2019, waves of outbreaks swept through the country, infecting millions. In 2018 alone, the disease spread at alarming speed, overwhelming the already fragile health facilities. Patients often had to travel long distances to reach the nearest treatment center, and for many, the journey was simply too long.
It was during this critical period that Qatar Fund for Development stepped in, partnering with international organizations to deliver life-saving assistance. In 2018, QFFD funded urgent cholera response interventions, including the provision of medical supplies, support for cholera treatment centers, and deployment of rapid response teams to contain the spread of the disease. This effort not only saved lives but also strengthened local capacity to detect and respond to future outbreaks.
2024: Renewed Commitment Amid a Continuing Crisis
Fast forward to 2024, and Yemen’s health system still struggles to recover. The country faces recurring disease outbreaks, limited access to clean water, and shortages of essential medicines. In response, QFFD renewed its support through large-scale health interventions, again focusing on waterborne diseases and emergency health care. Working with trusted humanitarian partners, the 2024 projects expanded the reach of cholera prevention campaigns, rehabilitated key water and sanitation facilities, and ensured that health workers on the frontlines had the training and resources they needed.
These interventions were not isolated acts of charity; they were part of a consistent, strategic approach by Qatar to stand by Yemen in its darkest hours. From emergency shipments of medical kits to long-term health system support, QFFD’s efforts reflect a recognition that in humanitarian crises, continuity is as important as immediacy.
The impact of Qatar’s support is measured not only in the number of cholera cases reduced, water systems rehabilitated, or treatment kits delivered — but in the dignity restored to families who can once again access clean water, in the relief of mothers seeing their children recover, and in the resilience built within communities to face the next challenge.

As climate change, economic collapse, and conflict continue to threaten public health, the need for sustained and coordinated humanitarian action remains urgent.
